Keynote session: Beyond "Lazy & Unmotivated" - Why Parents and Teachers Need to Know About Executive Skills by Peg Dawson, EdD
Youngsters with poor executive skills are disorganized or forgetful, have trouble getting started on tasks, get distracted easily, lose papers or assignments, forget to bring home the materials to complete homework, or forget to hand in homework. Learn strategies to modify the environment to reduce the impace of weak executive skills. This will include procedures such as coaching that can be used to teach children how to improve specific executive skill deficits in the context of home or school expectations.
Lunchtime session: Dyslexia: Myth Busting and Soul Saving by Dr. Virginia Taylor
New medical reserach about dyslexia and toxic stress should be a game changer in education. It's time to unite evidence-based medicine with best-practice education to help schools with the problems of achievement gaps, test scores, literacy, bullying, school dropout rates, and much more. The research is exciting as hard science puts a whole new spin on understanding why children struggle in school. The answers are not hard, nor expencive. This session presents ideas whereby everybody wins.
