Guided Growth: Developing a Community-Based System of Prevention & Early Intervention for Families and their Children Affected by Perinatal Substance Exposure
Substance use in pregnancy continues to be a significant factor in the morbidity and mortality associated with pregnancy and the newborn. However, the impact on the child continues over his or her lifespan. This session will examine the structural and functional changes in the developing fetal brain induced by prenatal substance exposure, will demonstrate how these changes ultimately impact learning and behavior in the children, and will present an evidence-based system of prevention and early intervention.
At the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe a screening and brief intervention strategy for intervening in pregnancies complicated by substance use and misuse
- Name the four diagnostic criteria within Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders
- Analyze a child's behavior across three domains of functioning
- Discuss an integrated system of care that will improve the long-term outcome of a child affect by prenatal substance exposure
This Guided Growth Training is presented by Dr. Ira Chasnoff. Dr. Chasnoff is an award-winning author, researcher and lecturer, is president of NTI Upstream and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He is one of the nation's leading researchers in the field of child development and the effects of maternal alcohol and drug use on the newborn infant and child.
