Event description

Description

Principal Doris Lee will frame this visit by sharing Village Academy’s literacy vision and goals for their school community, with a particular emphasis on reading interventions and on fostering equity across the school. Participants will learn about and see Village Academy’s implementation of Harvard’s Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI) during a strategic reading period, and will learn about the school’s approach to providing all students with the reading, writing, and discussion support that they need.

They will also learn about Village Academy’s deliberate approach to building cultural competency and fostering racial and cultural equity across their school and school community – through tracking the school’s progress on a research-based cultural competency rubric, engaging in a whole-staff book club around Chris Emdin’s For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood, providing whole-staff PD focused on culturally relevant pedagogy, adopting Urban Word’s Words & Verbs spoken word curriculum, engaging in a parent/family book club, and more.

This visit connects to several Quality Review indicators, including 1.2 Pedagogy, 1.4 Positive Learning Environment, 4.2 (Teacher Teams & Leadership Development), and 5.1 (Monitoring & Revising Systems). It ties to all four domains of Danielson, with a particular focus on 3b (Questioning & Discussion), 3c (Engaging Students in Learning), and 3e (Demonstrating Flexibility & Responsiveness).
