Event description

Description

Strategic questioning is a tool for asking questions in a way that encourages people to think about their own answers, inviting them to reflect on their own views, while you in turn are truly listening. It is effective in the context of social justice, as well as in in your personal life when you find yourself facing problems or conversations that need help moving forward.

Shakti Butler teaches strategic questioning through the lens of race and equity issues. She begins with a discussion about the racial inequality imbedded in our history and our systems— bias, privilege, internalized racism—so that participants can find a common language and framework around race and inequity.

Dr. Butler then teaches the Introduction to Strategic Questioning, an essential skill of advanced leadership in social justice. The skill set requires participants to reframe questions and encourage conversations that evoke fresh ideas, build curiosity, invite deeper ownership, and follow uncertainty into new and better solutions that can transform institutions.

This is a process tool that can become a practice in addressing new ways to develop more equity and inclusion. It can also be used to sift through conversations, opinions, and attitudes that often lead to a dead end in terms of transformation and change. Using examples from participants’ lives, this workshop applies a systemic and structural approach to encourage a process for addressing issues in ways that may be considered from multiple perspectives and analyses.

Shakti Butler, PhD is a visionary filmmaker, transformative learning educator, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. Dr. Butler is President and Founder of World Trust Educational Services, Inc., a non-profit transformative educational organization.
