Why is this hike different from all other hikes?
JOC is teaming up with Strategic Hebrew to offer a unique and unparalleled Hebrew Hiking Experience… for your whole family! Read on for more details:
Why learn Hebrew in the woods?
Well, the question really should be “why not???”
Learning a language is about communication and effective sharing of information. It’s not about passing a test in a room with four walls. So, if we can practice making ourselves understood anywhere, why not practice while doing something fun?!
What can I expect to learn?
We know that there are many different ways to learn a language, so we focus on strategies that you can apply to every situation and every subject.
You will be surrounded by the sounds of the Hebrew language and have the opportunity to perform certain language oriented tasks during the course of the hike: scavenger hunts, riddles, identifying natural and found objects… You’ll come away with some new vocabulary, but more than that, you’ll have the opportunity to watch yourself figure out what to do and how to make yourself understood in this Hebrew centered environment.
Join us in stepping out of the classroom and into the great, wide, communicative world!
Who is this geared for?
Everyone! There will be games, activities and Hebrew instruction geared for children ages 6 & UP. With breakout activities along the trail, children can make new friends, exercise and build their Hebrew skills all in one afternoon!
All levels--from absolute beginner to native speaker--welcome and supported.
Can I bring my younger children?
Yes, as long as they remain within your sight at all times.
Our Strategic Hebrew Fellows are prepared to focus on the cognitive level of students aged 6 & up. You are welcome to accompany your elementary or middle school aged child to the level that is most appropriate, but please be sure that younger children do not detract from the language experience of serious older siblings.
Can I come along without children?
Of course you can! There will be plenty of people to meet and talk with in Hebrew. You can even try your skill at some of our hands-on learning activities… the language in the riddles is sure to keep you on your toes.
Do I have to speak Hebrew the WHOLE TIME??? What if my Hebrew skills are rusty or I'm just a beginner?
Don't worry!!!! There will be activities appropriate for different levels of Hebrew, and all will be supported throughout the day. Kids will be divided by Hebrew comfort level and adults are welcome to join the group that is most comfortable for them, either accompanying their elementary or middle school aged children or a level of their choice. The games, scavenger hunts and discussions will be led by our talented Strategic Hebrew fellows who are prepared to work with mixed age groups.
Don’t sweat it… we’ll give you and your children all the vocabulary you need to get through the day!
What if I am a native Hebrew speaker and my kids are fluent?
You are welcome to come along help contribute to the Hebrew atmosphere we strive to cultivate. Of course, you won’t be stuck with the beginning language learners all day. There will be activities appropriate to each level, and really… who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt?
Tell me more about this hike…
Teatown Lake Reservation is an excellent choice for a day in the park, not too challenging, but not entirely flat either. There is a bit of scrambling at the beginning and then the trail opens up to a beautiful viewpoint. As we circle the lake, we will pass a variety of wildlife that children can explore and illustrate.
Hike length is ~3 miles with more strenuous options if time/inclination permit.
We will begin at 10:30 and conclude between 12:30-1:00. Bring snacks/trail mix and plenty of water (minimum 2 liters) to keep electrolytes up during the trip.
OK, ok… I’m intrigued. How much does this cost?
$24 for one parent and one child, $12 each additional child.
