Strategic Communication Workshop

“How to Improve your Organization’s Digital Communication and Activate a Cohort of Citizen Storytellers for Maximum Impact”

Sponsored by KVEC

November 1, 2017

HCTC – Hazard, Kentucky

Without question, digital technology has accelerated the speed of the world’s activity and the pervasiveness of human connections. Many of us are far more connected to stories and information than we have ever been. We’re now entering a phase of communication overload from an organizational point-of-view. The definition and purpose of a “story” in our sector has rapidly evolved, and it’s harder than ever to escape the noise and develop organizational cultures of storytelling to share and connect personal stories of change and impact.

Few would deny that storytelling is a powerful tool for inspiring action and change and influencing thought leaders, funders, and decision makers. In the digital era, the shape and delivery of stories has shifted dramatically. Long-form narrative and conventional journalism now share the stage with messages of 140 characters or fewer and images that disappear seconds after they are opened. While there have never been more ways to reach audiences, it has also never been more difficult to really reach them.

Workshop Outcomes:

- Analysis of current organizational messaging

- Essentials of organizational storytelling that align to organizational goals

- Develop a portfolio of topics and stories

- Action plan to activate a cohort of collaborators

- Five essential building blocks of a successful organizational story:

o Character

o Trajectory

o Authenticity

o Action-oriented

o Hook

- The future of organizational storytelling for social impact

This workshop will be led by John Trybus from Georgetown University’s renowned Center for Social Impact Communications (CSIC). He will share findings from new applied research into the future of communication for social impact. The results and ideas for action will surprise and inspire you.

We are headed into an entirely new era of communication that will arguably change society–and certainly how social impact organizations communicate missions and encourage partnership and collaboration. Are you ready for the future?

This workshop is free to KVEC member district staff and limited to the first 50 registered participants.
