Strategic Collaboration

brought to you by

The Clorox Company Foundation

for

Faith-based and Nonprofit Organizations

The East Bay is home to non-profits engaging in important and critical work. Every cause, however, seems to have multiple organizations tackling it and pursuing similar missions. In recent years, as the number of non-profits has grown, collaboration amongst non-profits has declined making fundraising competitive.

This hands-on workshop/seminar will focus on helping executives and board members learn to strategically collaborate with other organization in their space, and with non-profits across disciplines. Participants will be provided with methods, tools, and templates to define challenges in working collaborative, approaching difficult conversations regarding overlapping markets, developing joint memorandums of understanding and strategic initiatives, engaging in thought leadership, co-authoring funding proposals, and approaching funders regarding joint opportunities.

Additionally, participants are provided with an overview of joint cross-agency proposal writing fundamentals for obtaining grants.

Key Learning Outcomes/Takeaways:

  1. Approaching Market Research and Identifying Non-Profits with similar or same missions; or non-profits serving same or similar constituents

  2. Moving from competitor to collaborators in the same space

  3. Approaching difficult conversations regarding overlapping markets

  4. Developing joint memorandums of understanding, and strategic initiatives

  5. Collaborating to become thought leaders for the cause you are working towards

  6. Writing joint proposals (either cross-disciplinary or within the same space), approaching philanthropists to fund proposals with all organization’s in mind, learn cross-agency proposal writing and evaluation best practices

The workshop will be presented by Mizgon Zahir Darby and Anthony Tansimore. Darby is a non-profit executive who has worked across disciplines in the non-profit space for over 18 years. She has successfully created collaborative opportunities that have led to securing multi-million-dollar funding initiatives for agencies. Tansimore leads the Blueridge Advisors team as they provide guidance and direction to national and global foundations and social impact organizations in hiring, restructuring, and developing their boards, teams, and new leaders. The team also focuses on strengthening the existing leadership within an organization through effective and impactful business practices, which elevates team cohesiveness and supports their capacity to make a greater impact in the world. With more than 25 years of experience as a senior executive in nonprofits and foundations, Anthony has an acute knowledge of how organizations work, where the tensions points are, and how to navigate through challenging transitions. In addition to leading the Blueridge team, he speaks at national philanthropy and nonprofit conferences on the topics of succession planning, improving board governance, and various perspectives to increase equity, justice, and inclusion in hiring senior leaders. Anthony believes that there is no situation so complex that it cannot be solved by asking hard questions, self-reflection, respect, honesty, transparency, encouragement, and patience.
