Djamel Allioui - Mandolin Player
Story of the Kabyle of North Africa

This Storytelling Evening features Djamel Allioui who was born and raised in the village of Kabylie, in a mountainous region in northeastern Algeria. Orphaned at eight years old, he spent his childhood living with relatives. A poor student and a lonely child he found solace in the traditional music of Kabylie. In early adolesence he discovered a natural gift for playing the Algerian mandolin, guitar and banjo. In a lovely, natural voice he sang and played for the delight of others at parties and festivals. Arriving in Paris in 1992, he supported himself singing in restaurants and in the métro. Djamel sang for his idol, the now legendary Kabyle singer Matoub Lounes who performed frequently in Paris. Djamel proudly calls himself his protégé. In 1998 Matoub Lounes was assassinated in Algeria. Djamel has performed on Berber television and radio: BRTV, and is currently preparing an album of traditional and popular songs in both Kabyle and Arab.

The menu will feature a traditional Kabyle cuisine.  As usual, it will be a complete dinner with choice of red or white wine, beer, cremant, and other beverages served. This Storytelling Evening will be chez moi. Codes sent when you RSVP.

                                                                Yours in story,
                                                                                                Bernadette
