About this event

In style and content, poetry subverts expectations and upends the usual hierarchies of language. Poetry lends itself to expression of that which is left unspoken and it gives voice to those who are unheard. It is a channel for the inner world, and a useful tool in the activist’s arsenal.

The Inside Our Minds Storytelling as Activism Workshop series continues with a poetry workshop hosted by award-winning poet and author Lauren Russell. In it, we will learn how poetry can be used as a tool for creating your own mental health narrative. Don’t worry about coming to this workshop as a fully-fledged poet. People of all levels are welcome. This workshop is for you if write poetry and would like to hone your skills. This workshop is for you if you enjoy poetry and would like to learn how to create it. This workshop is for you if you are a person who likes to express yourself. This workshop is for you if you are simply curious about how poetry intersects with madness.

What To Expect: This workshop will be a generative poetry writing space, guiding participants through a series of group poetry readings, group writing exercises, and a final collective poetry writing exercise. When you register, we will send you an email with the selected readings (three poems) if you are interested in checking them out ahead of time.

This workshop is part of a series made financially possible through support from Opportunity Fund. Stay tuned for more workshops and opportunities relating to artistic craft, mental health storytelling, and activism. Inside Our Minds is a project of New Sun Rising.
