Event description

Description

Storytellers is a riff on story slams. While eliminating the competitive aspect, we invite to each Storytellers event three individuals to tell a brief story on a specific topic.

This month, the topic is "New."

Entry to the event is $15 per person to cover the cost of the event and it includes light bites and (non-alcoholic) beverages.

The storytellers featured at this event are Susan Gerock, Ky Washington and Mary Lauer.

Susan Gerock:
Susan Lilly Gerock is no stranger to change. While she currently serves as the Chief Information Officer for a publicly-traded company in Washington, DC, she has worked in politics, for a manufacturing company, as a consultant, and owned a women's clothing boutique in Old Town. A native of West Virginia, she moved to Virginia in 1984 to attend The College of William and Mary, where she majored in Government and minored in Economics. She also holds a M.S. degree from the University of Virginia. She resides in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County with her husband, Jim, and their incredibly spoiled cat, Lotus.

Susan's purpose in life is to blow things up and rebuild something new and better. What happens when the thing that most needs to be blown up and rebuilt is herself?

Ky Washington:
A woman, an artist, a healer, and most important, here to serve you on your beauty and wellness journey. As a professional makeup artist, Ky has traveled the country to service her exclusive clients and looks forward to every moment. As an aromatherapist, she wants to give you the gift of healing that was given to her through a clean lifestyle. You can be a modern woman and still be health conscious!

Ky will tell the story of the first time she tried kale...

Mary Lauer:
Mary has worked at the Center for Naval Analyses for 20 years. In that time, she has contributed to a wide range of projects: from logistics to counter-drug operations, from anti-air warfare to command and control--her preferred field. In 1998, she and her supervisor created a position that allowed her to sit at the juncture of data and analysis. Her first field experience in a deployed billet with a battle group staff has allowed her to work very closely with the operating forces of the Navy. She has also had the opportunity toassist the Navy's program process through an internship in OPNAV. Her assignment to OPNAV DEEP BLUE allowed her to work on projects that had high visibility within the OPNAV staff as well as close ties to the operating forces. She returned to the fleet to serve as a strike group CNA field representative to work closely with the operating forces once more. That focus on directly supporting the operating forces continued with her support to JIEDDO in three separate deployments to Camp Victory in Baghdad, Iraq for a total of one year. She also spent a year in Afghanistan, providing ORSA support directly to Paladin East in 2010 and RC-South in 2012.

Mary will tell the story of how doing something new (and a little scary) led her to a more fulfilling career and an unexpected area of expertise.
