Event description

Description

We are extremely lucky to kick off our skills workshops with the one and only Samantha Dunn, Executive Editor of Coast Magazine, and a widely published journalist. Her essays have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, O (Oprah) Magazine, Ms., and Shape.

The Solutions story workshop for journalists will focus on

1. How to best tell a solution story, narrative structure, the different forms it can take

2. Analyzing and critiquing solutions stories, and workshopping your own ideas

3. Whether you are in the early or middle stage of reporting, you will walk away with a solid reporting plan

4. Clear next steps for how you'll approach your story

Sam is extremely knowledgeable, and regularly teaches writing at UCLA. She'll be using the classic story structure elements to help organize your narratives to the greatest effect.

I've (Michaela) attended several workshops with her and can’t even begin to describe how much I got out of them. She is a great mentor and fun to work with.

Sam is also the author of Failing Paris, a finalist for the PEN West Fiction Award in 2000, and the memoirs Not By Accident: Reconstructing a Careless Life (Henry Holt & Co.), a BookSense 76 pick, and Faith in Carlos Gomez: A Memoir of Salsa, Sex and Salvation. Find her at www.samanthadunn.net

PLEASE NOTE - This workshop is open to journalists at all levels, whether you have worked on solutions stories or not. You do not need to have attended a SJN orientation to participate in this workshop.

Join our growing community of journalists. Our communities connect, support, and celebrate journalists interested in investigating and surfacing responses to social problems. From facilitating matchmaking between reporters and editors, to providing needed tools like story ideas, collaborators, and limited funding, we hope to increase the quality and quantity of solutions reporting in media across the world.
