Sessions
Informative and Interactive: Giving Adults Early Literacy Tips During Storytime
Presented by Anna Foote, Youth Consultant and Continuing Education Coordinator for the Northeast Kansas Library System
A good storytime is loved by kids. A great storytime is loved by everyone in the room! In this session, you will learn how to give short, informative early literacy tips to the adults who attend your storytimes. Tips will give adults a framework for understanding early literacy and enhancing it in their children. Please bring one or two favorite picture books to use during this session.
File Folder Fun: Enhancing Storytelling with Folder Stories
Presented by Melendra Sanders, Youth Consultant with the North Central Kansas Library System
Folder Stories are a great resource to add something new to storytimes. They are simple to make and don’t take a lot of resources, but they can have a big impact. They are perfectly suited for sharing concepts like counting and colors; however, with a little creativity, they can tell much more complicated stories.
Staying Positive While Dealing with Story Time Behavior Issues
Presented by Dannah Schatz, Positive Parenting Program Coach for Russell Child Development Center
Do you have children who interrupt you during story time, just when you’re getting to the best part of the story? Do you ever have any “wanderers”? Do you have kids (or parents) with other disruptive behaviors? If so, this session is for you! During this session, you will learn how to handle these behaviors and more by planning ahead, creating “ground rules” and recruiting the help of parents to make your story time run more smoothly.
Storytimes that Stick
Presented by Anne Harris, Outreach Librarian at the Wichita Public Library
Encourage the development of cognitive, social, motor, and language skills in young children and create lasting memories by incorporating book-related games into your storytimes. These games are quick and easy to make and can be used with your favorite storytime books. Examples of books and games that have worked well with 2-8 year-olds will be shown and discussed.
Props to You – Using Story Time Boxes to Engage Listeners
Presented by Patty Collins, Youth Services Consultant with the Central Kansas Library System
Using props during storytelling can make a book even more engaging. Patty Collins, CKLS Youth Services Consultant, will demonstrate how to use SWKLS and CKLS story time boxes to entertain your story time audience and enrich your storytelling skills.
