The Story:
This short story was published in 1961 as part of the Richard Wright compilation titled Eight Men. “Almos’ A Man” centers on a young, African-American farm worker who is struggling to declare his identity in the rural South.
After a hard day at work, seventeen-year-old Dave heads across the fields for home, still thinking about a conflict he’d had with some other field hands that day. He vows to someday own a gun and get the respect he deserves. He wants to prove to the others that he is no longer a child.
