Description

Learn how to structure a work of fiction or narrative non-fiction at this one-day workshop with acclaimed writer Kathryn Heyman

Writing requires a mixture of art and craft – no matter what genre you’re working in. Whether you’re writing fiction or narrative non-fiction, this unique masterclass with acclaimed novelist Kathryn Heyman will teach you how to structure a compelling story – and become a better writer.

Over the course of the day, you’ll learn how to balance the chaos of creativity with the novel’s need for structure and order. You’ll leave with a deep understanding of narrative structure, and the tools to apply what you’ve learned to your own writing project.

The craft of longform writing – techniques and tricks that you can apply to your own work

Advice on how to overcome doubt and uncertainty during the writing process

The key questions you should ask yourself about your book

Creating pace, tension and moments of change within your story

Developing characters – including an active protagonist and secondary characters

How to structure a compelling story for readers – and create the perfect ending

Practical writing exercises and Q&A

Please note this class is most suitable for writers who have an idea for a work of fiction or narrative non-fiction, or have already started writing a book – it’s not ideal for beginners

Course preparation

Before the class, you’re encouraged to take some time to think about your desired project – whether it’s a novel or a work of longform narrative non-fiction

You should arrive at the class with an idea for the longform work you want to write – this could be anything from a concept for your novel, to a storyline or an idea for a character
