Event description

Description

“Stone Soup” is a folk tale with variants worldwide: a stranger tricks a town into feeding him and teaches them a lesson in community and collaboration, as together they create a pot of soup for all to share. In the glass studio the crucible is that pot from which material, the “stone soup” that is glass, is drawn to feed the common work - a prescribed recipe which creates the transparent, non-crystalline solid with which we are familiar. With the communal pot in mind, our weekend workshop will focus on glass as a chemistry— a dynamic life of chemical reactions which feeds us molten material. The class’ lecture component will explore the boundaries of what we know to be ‘glass.’ By looking at its component ingredients (silica, fluxes, stabilizers, colorants, ...) we seek to break down conceptual barriers between glasses, metals, and ceramics. In the spirit of experimental practice and collaborative learning, we will mix and melt our own recipes together, where students will be invited to contribute their own batch ingredients to the common pot. We’ll then create a new story in the objects we make with the material we share.

Students will be provided with a N-95 particulate dust mask, but are encouraged to bring a respirator if they own one.
