STOLEN JARS

Montclair, NJ

Light bounces back from everything

On A Reminder, Stolen Jars’ third LP, feelings never disappear — they refract, bounce back, return as part of a new whole. The same can be said of Stolen Jars, a band Cody Fitzgerald has guided through multiple permutations, from a high-school bedroom project in Montclair, NJ to a fixture of the Brooklyn indie rock scene. A Reminder finds Stolen Jars deepening their arrangements, sharpening their lyrics, and expanding the band’s palette with powerful vocal melodies from Sarah Coffey.

THE NORTH COUNTRY

Washington, DC

https://thenorthcountry.bandcamp.com/

Andrew Grossman—bandleader, guitarist and lead vocalist for DC’s The North Country—documents his search for widespread subjective truththrough expressive, narrative-based songwriting, providing both context and personal color on the trials, tribulations and tiny victories of 21st-century adulthood. Blending polyphonic psychedelia, classic American songwritership and soulful indie-rock compositions, The North Country isa band with a distinct message and broad appeal. Think about a deep songwriting session between Elvis Costello, Andrew Bird and Jeff Lynne, mix in Songs in the Key of Life-esque horn arrangements, St. Vincent’s otherworldly progressions, and you’re on your way to understanding The North Country.

MISTER GOBLIN

Washington, DC

https://mistergoblin.bandcamp.com

Mister Goblin is the solo moniker of Sam Woodring, former singer/guitarist of Wheaton, MD’s Two Inch Astronaut. Titled in honor of a nickname given to him by a former student, the new project is liberated from the ‘rock’ confines of his old band. His debut EP finds him experimenting with various synths, acoustic soundscapes, and different kinds of percussion (including but not limited to what could be termed ‘trap drums’) in addition to material that feels more like a logical extension of his old band. Lyrically as well, the album is less concerned with ritual, and songs about everything from vampirism to skee-ball can be found on the album. More than anything else, Final Boy is the sound of a slyly melodic songwriter rediscovering that music gives you permission to do what you want, and the joy and reinvigoration that come from that are palpable throughout.
