Stoke Newington History Talks is back!

About this Event

You are invited to the 14th Stoke Newington History Talks event; an evening of three talks about Stoke Newington's history from different perspectives organised by local history enthusiast Amir Dotan (www.StokeNewingtonHistory.com).

The event will be streamed on YouTube at 19:00 on December 3rd. Link to the YouTube stream will be provided in a reminder 2 days before the event. To minimise possible technical glitches, the talks will be pre-recorded but all speakers will attend the event and answer questions at the end of each talk. Each talk is 25min followed by 5min Q&A.

Tickets are £4. Ticket sales go to charity. The speakers donate their time for free. This time, proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Hackney Foodbank. The last six events have raised a total of £3,608 for local charities (Hackney Winter Night Shelter, North London Action for the Homeless, Pets Against Loneliness , Hackney Migrant Centre, Hackney Foodbank, Hackney Playbus).

THE LINE UP:

Talk no. 1 - Come fly with me - Exploring old aerial photos of Stoke Newington by Amir Dotan

Old aerial photos from the 1930s and 1940s offer a fascinating bird's-eye view of Stoke Newington showing areas before and after WW2 bomb damage and large scale housing developments led to dramatic changes in parts of the former borough. Zooming in reveals long-gone cinemas, churches and sections of the New River that were once a dominating feature of Stoke Newington's streetscape. This talk will take you back in time and up in the air using detailed archival aerial footage. Get ready for take off!

Amir Dotan (StokeNewingtonHistory.com) has been researching and sharing the history of Stoke Newington as a hobby since 2011. He shares his findings on TwitterFacebookInstagram and Flickr on a daily basis. He started 'Stoke Newington History Talks', a quarterly event, in late 2016.

Talk no. 2 - Fire stations and fire fighting in Stoke Newington – A quick history by Billy Reading

In 250 years, Stoke Newington has had three fire engine houses and three fire stations. It still has an active fire station, one of three serving the borough of Hackney. In this whistle-stop tour, Billy Reading will place Stoke Newington’s fire stations into the context of the wider history of fire fighting provision in the UK.

Billy Reading is an architectural historian and author. He has worked in the heritage sector for over fifteen years, currently as Inspector of Historic Buildings leading on advice for Whitehall departments and occupied Royal Palaces.

Talk no. 3 - Living in Clissold House – a brief snapshot of park life and other adventures by Caz Richards

Caz worked for the Hackney Parks service from 1978 until 2001, when she went to work for the London Wildlife Trust as manager of Camley Street Natural Park. While working as a park keeper in Clissold Park, Caz lived in a flat in Clissold House from 1986 to1999. In this talk she'll share her unique experience living in Clissold House and share tales of life after the park gates closed and the ways in which she stopped the ‘parks patrol’ as they were then, from damaging bits of the building. The break ins, filming, festivals, the animal enclosure, guerrilla gardening, secret repairs and much more!

Now based in Dorset, Caz now coordinates Dorset Food and Drink; supporting and promoting local producers at events, festivals, shows and markets. “You can take the girl out of Stoke Newington but can’t take N16 out of the girl!
