Event description

Description

"What upsets people are not things in themselves, but their judgements about these things" Epictetus

Sometimes our emotions can be overwhelming. They “take over” and make us do things we don’t always want to do. They color our perception of reality, whether we are aware of it or not.

The Stoics systematically analyzed the emotional world and spoke about 4 types of illusionary emotions: craving, fear, pleasure and sorrow.

They discerned between feelings that result from appearances, and healthy emotions that characterize the wise person. Emotions such as joy, caution and aspiration.

In this workshop we will take steps to see our emotional world as it is and nurture the positive emotions through exercises of reflection, concentration, imagination and much more.

This workshop is part of a three day celebration of International Stoic Week, with discussions on Stoic perspectives and guidelines for everyday living.

Instructor: Gil Sommer, Director of the Chicago branch of New Acropolis.

Free entrance, $5 suggested donation
