Event Details

 The ‘Rappin Black History Series

-Exploring the Griot ancient oral tradition through Rhythm and Poetry-

The ‘Rappin Black History Exhibit is a three part series that focuses on the roots of African American Poetry.  Each of our three events are self-contained and has its own focus; yet each builds upon one another, creating a link from the 1965 Black Arts Movement in Harlem NY, to the 1965 Watts Writers’ Workshop in Watts CA. and beyond.

 Day 1 – February 4th, 5pm – 8pm Opening Night Reception and Social Mixer

*Free Event: Must RSVP to Attend*

The opening night reception will consist of Live Art, Music and Spoken word. Guest poets will be invited to share work centered in the African American experience. We will have an interactive conversation on art, literature and the creative process. The host will also give insight as to the importance of ‘The Rappin Black History Series and details about Part 2 and Part 3 of the series. Complimentary refreshments and beverages will be available.

Day 2 – February 11th 5pm – 8pm – Documentary screening of “Hustlers Convention”.

*Free Event: Must RSVP to Attend*

Executive Produced by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Hustlers Convention is a documentary film on the forgotten roots of rap.  The film focuses on the life and times of Jalal Mansur Nuriddin of The Legendary Last Poets and the forgotten influence of his seminal record Hustlers Convention. The film is 120 minutes, after which we will have QA and discuss the roots of rap through poetry. Complimentary light refreshments will also so be available.

Day 3 – February 25th, 5pm – 8pm – Birth Day Celebration for Father Amde of The Legendary Watts Prophets.

This night will feature a live band, special guest, renowned poets and vocalist that all will pay tribute to Father Amde of The Watts Prophets.

Father Amde of The Watts Prophets and Dr. Jalal Nuriddin of The Last Poets are breathing links from the civil rights movement to the Hip-hop generation of today.  These living legends have been sampled by countless hip-hop artists and are accredited with being the forerunners to what is called rap today.

We look forward to seeing everyone come out to experience this historical ‘Rappin Black History series during Black History Month. It will take place on Saturday February 4th, 11th and 25th, 2017 at The Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum, in Culver City California.

RSVP is a must to attend, please confirm your seat to one or all three events by clicking RSVP and printing out your tickets online.

ALL THREE EVENTS ARE FREE!!!  You must RSVP to attend.

We hope to see you at one or all of our events for the “Rappin Black History series”
