Event description
Join us to celebrate 25 years of the Angelou Centre with an evening of food and live entertainment.

About this Event

Join us to celebrate 25 years of Women Empowering Women with the Angelou Centre. During the last quarter of a century, The Angelou Centre has not only supported the most vulnerable BME women by providing sanctuary in times of violence, homelessness and destitution, but has built a wrap-around holistic support service including advocacy, counselling and training. It exists as an open access hub of black feminist expertise, focussed and informed by the lived experiences of survivors of VAWG to provide guidance and training to mainstream organisations and agencies to improve the impact and results for black minoritised women and children survivors far beyond the reach of their own services.

We want to celebrate all that we have achieved with a good old party and a night of spoken word performances from some of the most exquisite talents the North East has to offer!

PROGRAMME:

7:30 Dance Performance by the incomparable Lance Twins

8:00 Keynote Speech from Beverley Goldstein, a Trinidadian born activist who has contributed to social work, academia and community development for 50 years, former CEO of The BECON and Chair of the board of NEEACA

9:30 Spoken Word Performances by Sheree Mathews and Degna Stone from Eclipse Theatre Company

10:30 DJ Awkward Black Girl playing world class tunes into the night

Midnight Carriages

DRESS CODE:

TRADITIONAL/ YOUR FINEST ROBES!

We invite you to join us in celebration of all women of colour, and support us to grown further and extend the impact we can make in the lives of women for years to come. It is only with the support from people like you that we are able to empower black minoritised women and survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse harmful practices such as FGM, forced marriage and honour abuse, to survive, thrive and achieve their potential.

If you cannot join us on the evening, please do consider sponsoring a woman who hasn’t the means to come so that she can participate in the kind of celebrations many of us take for granted as just another party. For so many of the women of colour we provide support and shelter to, the chance to attend a dinner such as this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity and we encourage you to sponsor a guest who is supported by the Angelou Centre.

If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact us on conference@angelou-centre.org.uk

Accessibility & Inclusivity - We commit to providing a harassment-free, accessible, and pleasant experience with equity in rights for all. We want every participant to feel welcome, included, and safe at the event. This event is a safe accessible space for all people of all intersections and a hate-free space; homophobia, racism and discrimination or hostility of any manner will not be tolerated. Moreover, we will do our best to accommodate specific needs, so please do include information in your order regarding accessibility, or dietary requirements. If you have any queries in relation to accessibility please do not hesitate to get in touch!
