Stepping into Story: Artmaking to Access Your Identity
Workshop with artist Cynthia Tom

Who are you? Why are you here and what for?
The first step to finding your true self and to understand where your passions lie, is to begin the exploration.
We provide an experiential workshop using intuitive art making techniques to access your inner stories in order to begin or continue your journey.

It is a powerful thing to deeply understand who you are, where you came from, where your ancestors came from and why, all the elements that are you. Working from a strong identity, gives you creativity, confidence and power, love, inner peace and health.

In this workshop, using hands on art making we begin to Explore, through discussion we learn how to Identify, and see how others Claim and use art to Proclaim their identity for healing and social change in the community.
Our identity is forged by many seen and unseen forces. Take the time to discover, define and direct who you are with love and intention.
Create hands-on art work to experience working from your intuition
See what other artists/creatives are doing to explore, play and showcase cultural and community issues through visual art.
While we can’t write your story in four hours, we can provide you with experiential and creative tools and next steps in defining and owning the power of You.

About Cynthia Tom
Cultural Surrealist | Visual Artist |Social Justice and Healing for Community and Women Curator/Activist

For my art practice of 25+ years, I am a philosopher and “street archeologist” obsessively curious about issues in my life, my family and my communities. Being raised as a person of color in this multicultural environment informs my life and work in the community. Painting, mixed media, art installation and community projects are my tools to spark imagination, kindle curiosity and tell “our stories.” My work helps me connect to my intuition and I am inspired to help others to re-connect with theirs. Art helps us dig ourselves out of decades of “other people’s rules and expectations to find and celebrate our true identity.”

Cynthia Tom is the founder/director of A Place of Her Own, an arts-based healing program. Board President of Asian American Women Artists Association 2006 – 2018. She is part of the Collections of the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, UC Santa Barbara.

She lectures on her work, issues related to women and Asian American women in the arts. She’s won awards for her art and leadership: ABC/KGO Profiles in Excellence Leadership award, The 2015 SOMArts Curatorial Fellowship and NPR Radio. Both her art and her community work, has been featured in the textbook by Postcolonial Feminism, the New York TimesSF Arts MonthlySF ChroniclePsychology Todayn.paradoxa – international feminist art journal and ERA 21– Czech feminist architecture journal. | instagram | FB cynthiatomart
