Event description

Description

Before you visit Treasures on Trial at Winterthur, bring a bag lunch to Stenton for a Lunch and Learn Lecture featuring Freeman's Matthew Wilcox, as he explores fakes and forgeries in the critical art world. Drawing on his 30th years of experience in the worlds of classical archaeology, museums and the auction profession, Matt will explore the problems facing everyone from the casual antique collector to the professional museum curator, gallery owner and academic. Not confined to fine art, all forms of property high-value property (from baseball cards to watches, Renoirs to pocket books) have been and continue to be faked by evermore sophisticated fraudsters seeking to swindle both the unwitting public and cognoscenti alike. Caveat Emptor has never been more aptly applied than in today’s global art and antiques market. Event is free.

We hope you will also attend the Winterthur Symposium, Treasures on Trial: The Truth and Consequences of Fine Art Forgery, September 28th and 29th. Registration is available online.

Matthew S. Wilcox is Vice President of Trusts & Estates at Freeman’s Auction House in Philadelphia. A 20-year veteran of the auction industry, Matt is an accredited appraiser with the Appraisers Association of America and on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Appraisal Education. A graduate of Bowdoin College, he holds a Master’s degree in Art History from UNC-Chapel Hill and a graduate certificate in Museum Studies from George Washington University. He is an alumnus of the Attingham Summer School in England, the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Matt speaks frequently on art world matters, and his publications can be found in the Journal of Advance Appraisal Studies, the American Journal of Archaeology, Freemans Trusts & Estates Newsletter, which he launched in 2013, and on www.worthpoint.com, and www.chubbcollector.com,. In 2016, Matt organized a 2-day seminar for the Foundation for Appraisal Education which included 18 speakers addressing the issue of fakes and forgeries.
