Event description

Description

Now more than ever, hospitals and health systems are benefiting from continuing advancements in technology! Developments in areas such as digital health and data and analytics are enhancing clinical resources, resulting in improved patient health. Interactive tools provide patients and their families with a better understanding and management of their care. Come see firsthand how such innovations are making a difference in the world of pediatric healthcare! During National Health IT (HIT) Week, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia will be sponsoring a conference, CHOP Tech: STEMulating Experiences with Healthcare Technology. Girls in grades 6 through 10 are invited to listen to professionals in the Information Services (IS) and Nursing Informatics fields speak on the importance of technology in healthcare and how a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education can lead to exciting and successful career opportunities. Girls will also hear from CHOP’s own Gilbert Davis, AVP and Assistant Chief Information Officer (ACIO) and Kindly Kenikki, an 11-year-old girl who inspires and motivates people with her devotion to community service and charity work. Kenikki will speak to her peers on how can use their talents, gifts, and ideas in the world of STEM and help the communities where they reside.

There will be two exciting tracks to select from:

The MEDICAL track will include the following:

1) Robotics: This presentation will be given by Young Men and Women in Charge (YMWIC). A small group of middle and high school girls will demonstrate how math and science were used to create their own remote controlled robots. Richard Roberts, the Executive Director of YMWIC, will explain how the skills needed to build a robot can be translated into a career in health care sciences and medical innovation.

2) DaVinci Robot: This presentation will be given by CHOP staff and students will have the opportunity to work directly with a medical robot and compete with one another using gamification.

3) Code Simulation: Students will participate in a role based medical simulation exercise where they will practice CPR skills and understand how doctors and nurses utilize medical technology to save a patient’s life.

The INFORMATION SERVICES track will explore different technologies and how they are integrated within the healthcare field. Students will receive hands-on experience with software and applications that are used here at CHOP, such as:

1) Dell Boomi: Dell Boomi brings the Internet of Things (IoT) to life with a visual programming interface that enables participants to control the colors and patterns of a series of lights based on simple commands. They will also get to drive the Roomba robot!

2) Camtasia: CHOP IS Trainers will guide students in creating a short training video using Camtasia Studios 8.6. Students will learn how to create and edit a training video for busy clinicians to learn o on the run.

3) Big Data: Companies like Amazon use Big Data to influence decisions while shopping. Google uses it to predict what people will search for next. In this exciting demo, students will get to see first-hand how hospitals use.

4) LittleBits: Students will use LittleBits electronic building blocks to create one of three fun activities and will discover how such technology works in a healthcare environment.
