Event description

Description

STEAMS School is a one day a week 'school' that immerses your child in the STEAMS curriculum (science, technology, engineering, art, maths, and societal issues). Each week, learning is designed around the STEAMS concept to challenge students to think, explore and create new ideas while surrounded by like-minded peers.

The STEAMS School day starts with opportunities for individual focus in Science, Maths or Spanish, before moving to collaborative learning following a conceptual theme (which changes each term) with fascinating weekly topics. The afternoon is hands-on creative time, with learning through invention and experiments linked to the weekly topic. The STEAMS School programme structure is based on Focused and Sustained Learning, Collaborative Learning, and Creativity.

FAQs

It is the parent's responsibility to secure exemption from their child's school to attend STEAMS School so that absences are not counted.

STEAMS is a unique acronym for the Ministry of Inspiration (MOI) topic areas of Science/Technology/ Engineering/Art/Maths/Societal Issues! STEAMS means that every class or workshop you take from MOI will be covering at least TWO of the six topic areas, making learning more relevant and allowing for broader, interdisciplinary thinking.

At STEAMS School we are inspiring keen, bright, young learners through the STEAMS model of education in a weekly classroom structure designed through educational excellence with both genders in mind.

Lesson Structure:

1. Focused and Sustained Learning: Individuals or small groups will take on a learning challenge and work on achieving their learning goals to a high standard over numerous weeks. ·This occurs through undertaking self-selected Maths/Science Badge units of work for the older class, individual learning focuses for the younger class with both age groups also able to opt for an hour of Spanish learning with a native Spanish speaker.

2. Collaborative Learning: Learning through ‘Big Ideas’ will be presented in an open-ended format with the focus on confidence building, thinking critically, how to evaluate and weigh evidence, and how to understand opposing viewpoints · Debate, group challenges, observation, experimentation, and discussion · Philosophical thinking and preconceived ideas will be challenged and explored

3. Creativity: Exploring of the ‘Big Idea’ through innovation with attention to the interests and learning style of each student. A wide variety of tools and supplies will be available for student use. · Thinking and designing creations in Art/Writing/Drama · Hands-on learning through structure and Engineering · Exploration in Cooking and Science

Nuts and Bolts:

Who should join STEAMS School?

Students ages 6-12 with a keen interest in the above structure and who have the ability to sustain concentration, effort, and interest. Students with an inquiring mind and a thirst for knowledge. Students who are self-controlled and who have behaviour consistent with a positive learning environment.

There is no formal assessment required to attend STEAMS School. We agree with the views of the following you-tube and we feel that although it mentions the word ‘gifted’ a great deal, its message can be applied to all enthusiastic students who get excited by what they learn. It thoroughly discusses the value of challenging our students in a safe way and the need for environments such as STEAMS School.http://www.byrdseed.com/tennessee-keynote-somuch-more-than-smart-kids/?icn=pop

Where are STEAMS School classes and when does it start?

Registration and billing is by term, although there is a discount for signing up for the whole year and for siblings.

Classes run on Wednesday starting 9am-2:45pm at NMIT (Richmond! Not Nelson), Block C, Lower Queens St, Richmond. Teachers will be present from 8:30 and until 3:15 to accommodate family needs to drop of early and pick up late.

Which class is right for my 9 year old? We will take into consideration a child’s individual needs, interests and maturity when deciding on class placement.

Who will teach STEAMS School?

SENIOR CLASS (9 to 13 year olds): Linda Rogers

Linda is an experienced and highly qualified educator whose experience spans over 25 years and includes: Classroom teacher; special needs school co-ordinator; advisor to schools for behaviour and learning; extension and gifted educator; private assessor and tutor for dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. Linda’s formal qualifications include a degree in Psychology; Post Graduate Teaching Certificate; registered NZ teacher; Master’s Degree: Education (Special Needs); Post Graduate Diploma: Educational Psychology; multiple training courses in gifted education and extension programmes from various providers.

JUNIOR CLASS (6 to 9 year olds): Catherine Barak

UK trained and experienced teacher with a special interest in maths teaching - both for those who find it a challenge and for those who need extension. She is a NZ registered teacher. She held the role of maths co-ordinator in a state school and was also acting Deputy Principal. She prefers a multi-sensory approach to teaching and likes to cater for different learning styles. She has a passion for teaching and a wide experience base beyond teaching that helps her to extend children's views of the World. Her goal in this role is helping each child find and follow their own passions through a choice orientated and varied programme.

Will there be a term theme if so what is it?

Each term both classes will focus on the same term concept or BIG IDEA.

For example: ‘WORK’ is our theme. A look at WORK from different angles with unlimited hands on experiences and exploration of the world of WORK. Trips to work environments will be undertaken by both classes.

How will parents be notified of a child’s achievements?

The key to solid learning is a triad of partnership between the child, the whanau, and the teacher. It is imperative that a working relationship is established and maintained. Whanau are encouraged to attend the end of day share circle to listen to what everyone has learned and share the excitement. The teachers are always available for discussion in person, by E-mail or phone and if they have a concern or ‘news’ regarding your child they will contact you directly. Weekly E-mails will go home letting you know the class programme so that you can discuss class activities with your child. Both teachers welcome your input and suggestions.

How much will STEAMS School cost?

The cost is $60 per week plus GST. This equates to approximately $690 per 10-week term. Families with more than one child attending will receive a 10% discount. Payments must be made by Week 2 of each term or penalty charges may apply. We run on a tight budget, teachers must be paid and resources purchased!

How do I know this is the right programme for my child?

New children to STEAMS School will undergo a 3-week evaluation period to ensure that this is the right learning environment for the student. If both teacher and family are satisfied that this is the right placement, then billing for the rest of the term will occur after the trial period.
