Event description

Description

“Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign. But stories can also be used to empower, and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people. But stories can also repair that broken dignity.”

― Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The future of work is one with womxn of color at the center.

Join The Riveter and Future for Us for The State of Womxn of Color Roadshow, an evening to tell audacious stories of womxn of color at work, accompanied by an overview of the data, insights and solutions. This collaboration provides a platform for rising and established womxn of color professionals to share their experiences and next step strategies as they build powerful communities to create a future for where womxn of color lead at the highest levels across all sectors.

Hear from ACLU’s Michele Storms, Fred Hutch’s Raquel Sanchez, Skillspire’s Yasmin Ali and others, about stories that shaped their careers and how we come together to shape our region’s economic future with womxn of color at the center of the economic and innovation boom.

Allies and champions are invited to come together to support womxn of color professionals through community, culture and career development - to create equity of access and opportunities for advancement. Together we can take actions to advance womxn of color and explore what it takes to build intentional communities for and with womxn of color, examine how allies can strengthen their cultural competency muscle, and explore what true workplace collaboration can make possible!

Why womxn and not women?

The spelling of womxn is meant to show inclusion of trans, nonbinary, womxn of color, womxn with disabilities and all other marginalized genders. Both The Riveter and Future for Us use this spelling to indicate that our spaces and platform are open to anyone who identifies as such. We respect people of all genders, identities, and the use of pronouns that best identify an individual.

Speakers:

Michele Storms is the Executive Director at American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for Washington State and is a recognized leader of established racial justice and civil rights organizations in the Pacific Northwest. She is a fierce advocate for civil rights and civil liberties. She has a history of building successful programs in service to civil rights, civil liberties, and civil legal aid.

Yasmin Ali is the founder and CEO of Skillspire. She is a generous community builder and connector who appreciates the power of education for improving the quality of life. Skillspire aims to advance the careers and futures of immigrants, womxn, and underrepresented talent. We envision a tech sector that better reflects the populations it serves by training and supporting diverse, historically underrepresented communities in their journey to enter technical careers.

Raquel Sanchez is the Managing Director, Global Oncology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She was named PSBJ’s Top 40 under 40. Raquel is a Research Administrator with a demonstrated history of successful leadership in cancer research and public health administration. She is recognized for high level of accountability and innovative leadership.

Nikkita Oliver teaches public school students; works as an attorney; is an organizer in Seattle’s No Youth Jail and Black Lives Matter movements; and performs as a spoken word poet. She said running for office was never part of the plan. And when she finally did decide to run, it had been after lots of discussions and votes in the Peoples Party.
