Event Details

Mitchell Davis, BiblioLabs

Mitchell Davis is a Charleston native, a successful entrepreneur and a digital publishing & media technologist. In 2000, Mitchell founded BookSurge which allowed authors to self-publish books, manuscripts and other literary works. After four years of accelerated growth and success, BookSurge was acquired by Amazon in 2005.

Amazon quickly integrated BookSurge into its global services platform and renamed the company into CreateSpace which became the world’s first fully integrated global print-on-demand and publishing services company available anywhere. After two years in senior management at Amazon, Mitchell returned to Charleston in 2007 where he co-founded BiblioLabs with his partners.

BiblioLabs is another exciting technology and publishing company which has reinvented the way in which libraries store, manage, and make their literary works and other media available to their patrons. For example, BiblioLabs launched BibloBoard; which is an award winning mobile App and web platform which creates user-experiences that compete with leading consumer media companies and enables a more sustainable institutional sales model for publishers while transforming information access to society. To highlight the already rapid success and growth of BiblioLabs; it was self-funded, is currently profitable, and was confirmed by Inc. Magazines Top 500 list as the seventh fastest growing media company in 2012 right behind Facebook.

Mitchell is also a founder and producer at Organic Process Productions (OPP) an ‘active philanthropic’ media production company whose projects have included an award-winning documentary about the New Orleans Katrina floods in 2005, a cause documentary surf film with the Quiksilver Foundation and dozens of other books, films and events. OPP's Web of Water documentary project won a National Education Innovation Award in 2011.

Mitchell is a frequent writer and speaker on publishing, digital media and how to increase the reach and influence of the library in today’s modern society.
