Event Details

Startup Funerals are short conferences held once a month across different cities to help our entrepreneurship community learn lessons in failure from startups and entrepreneurs.

Close to 99% of startups fail! Dont you want to know why?

We do! Thats why we started Startup Funerals.

Failure is considered a taboo in our country, hence people are afraid to fail and the ones that do, seldom talk about it. Yet it is only through failure that we can understand the real lessons in success.

We believe the time is now to change how people perceive failure globally!

We want to foster a culture of innovation where people are comfortable to try out new ideas, take calculated risks, and be a little unreasonable.

At Startup Funerals we are on a mission help the entrepreneurship community celebrate failure by providing a place where you are comfortable to share and learn from the experiences of entrepreneurs and failed startups.

This conference is a must for any entrepreneur, aspiring entrepreneur, executive, or just a curious person who wants a saturday evening well spent.

Speakers Include:

Mahesh Murthy - Mahesh Murthy is a founding partner at Seedfund, and has over 26 years of marketing and communications experience, of which 15 years are in online marketing.

After dropping out of college, Mahesh sold vacuum cleaners from door to door, worked with Grey in India and Ogilvy in Hong Kong, where he won notoriety and awards as a creative director on HP, The Economist, Pepsi and MTV – for whom he wrote and directed a spot voted “Asia’s best commercial of the decade”.

He then moved to a Silicon Valley firm, CKS Partners (later, USWeb/CKS) as Creative Director, GM and Partner – where he helped launch the first commercial version of Yahoo in 1995 and the Earth’s Biggest Bookstore campaign for in 1997. After a successful NASDAQ IPO, Mahesh moved to head marketing at iCat, an e-commerce firm in Seattle subsequently acquired by Intel.

Mahesh then returned to India to run Channel V, a rival to MTV, till its sale to Newscorp in 2000 and then founded Passionfund to invest in and guide startups. Among his investments were Geodesic, a mobile software firm with a 2008 market cap of over $500m; EBS Direct, a multinational loyalty and marketing services firm; Compassbox (acquired by CareerLauncher) and WebDunia, India’s leading multilingual portal. While running search marketing campaigns for his favourite charity in 2003, Mahesh believed there was a need for a pay-for-performance digital brand management firm – and set up Pinstorm in Bombay. With over 120 people across 6 offices in India, Singapore, Malaysia, Europe and the US, Pinstorm is today among the world’s leading digital marketing firms.

Mahesh has spoken at Internet World Chicago, CNET(LA), 140Conf and other net conferences and won the world’s top awards at Cannes and Promax. He penned a reasonably infamous column in Business Today and Businessworld, and played the Donald Trump-equivalent role in Business Baazigar, a game show involving entrepreneurs and business plans. Mahesh writes a column in The Wall Street Journal.

Danny Carrol -  Daniel is a British national but has lived and worked in India since the beginning of 1996. He has 15 years leadership experience turning around distressed companies and 5 years experience in Real Estate Development . He received a Masters

Degree  in Corporate and Company Law from the London School of Economics. Daniel lives with his wife in Mumbai, his adopted home, and enjoys running ultra marathons and working with non-profits. He is also setting up India’s first Recovery Centre  that will specialise in reversing terminal cancer  by using just a change in diet. He is also the Deputy Chairman  and Head of CSR  of a Chamber of Commerce the British Business Group .

- Country head for an Australian asset solutions company called Mandal Asset   Solutions.

- Promoter and founder of Alchemy Solutions,  one of the first

companies in India to specialize in buying out and turning around distressed

companies in control situations.

Gautam Sinha - Gautam has never been predictable. He’s always steered his ship against the tide, sometimes raising corporate eyebrows, but always raising the bar.

An alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur, a leading business school in India, Gautam had a stint with Wipro from 1994 to 1996. His first brainchild, Team Value Associates (TVA), an international IT staffing company, fell victim to USA’s dotcom crash in 2000.

Moving away from IT professionals, Gautam sought fresh ground, turning to kids. He co-founded, a 3-D website and a community-focused children’s dotcom in 1999. Again, the dotcom crash played villain, affecting external funding; Coolden could not sustain itself for more than 24 months.

The double taste of failure pumped Gautam’s adrenalin glands. TVA Infotech, an IT recruitment company founded by him in 2000, went on to become the market leader in the IT recruiting space in the south of India. A pioneer in recruitment outsourcing much before the term ‘RPO’ was conceived, TVA became a 100+ company before being acquired by Allegis Group Inc, the largest staffing company in the USA, in March 2008.

After TVA’s acquisition, Gautam moved to the sea-side at Bandra, Mumbai. For a few months, he just dreamed afresh; the sea and the sun-set, clearly visible from his balcony, provided the inspiration. Soon, he conceived ‘myfirstcheque’ – a seed fund that will help first-generation entrepreneurs, as a co-founder, providing the initial investment, guidance, and mentorship.

myfirstcheque seeks to convert professionals who are hesitant to take the first step due to lack of finance, into entrepreneurs.

When Gautam isn’t reading business history, he could be caught writing for leading publications. But nothing excites him like a new idea.

 Limited seating is available.

***(We want this event to be free for entrepreneurs however be prepared to pay a small fee of ~Rs 250 at the door if our costs are not covered by sponsors)***
