Why Build & Develop Startup Ecosystems?

Dynamic startup ecosystems breed new startups that create 2/3 of new jobs, attract international talent and foreign direct investments. Network connectivity within and between the ecosystems is the single most important contributor to growth.

For past decade, Startup Commons has assisted national, regional and local governments with ecosystems of various maturity levels and population in US., EU and Asia - on policy making and developing solutions, services and instruments to nurture and grow thriving startup culture and startup ecosystems in globally connected world.

Who Should Attend?

The workshop is designed for those respponsibile for national, regional or city economic development - focused on economic growth via entrepreneurship, innovation, job creation and attracting investments. In addition, the workshop provides practical knowledge and tools for all key stakeholders who actively take part in developing their local startup ecosystem, either from policy design, funding instrument or support services design, ecosystem management and coordination roles, as well as budgeting and capacity building.

Workshop modules

Module 1: Crafting the globally attractive startup platforms

  • Understanding the startup ecosystem as a core part of local/regional economy (differences/ overlaps with innovation & entrepreneurship ecosystems)
  • Providing common language and terminology to use in relation to Startup Development Stages, innovations and ecosystem development
  • Introduction to required, key services and their iterative development balance to improve the services (and knowledge on startup realities in general)
  • Building common understanding on how different services contribute for the startup development, through improved understanding of the key targets of key services
  • Identifying the current public, private and NGO actors, which play key roles in the local ecosystem

Module 2: Tools, metrics and KPIs for the balanced ecosystem development

  • Balanced ecosystem framework and metrics. What should be measured and why?
  • Typical metrics currently used for measuring key services and ecosystems as a whole, what information is needed and why?
  • How does key domains/workgroup impact on ecosystem performance?
  • Tools and metrics to measure key services, organizations and whole ecosystem
  • How to identify bottlenecks and problem areas?
  • Digital tools to measure startup development based on Startup Development phase
  • How to connect with global digital investing ecosystem?

Module 3: Planning ahead: Defining targets, milestones and roadmap ahead

  • Identifying and mapping current support services or resources the key organizations contribute for the ecosystem as a whole
  • How to define the long term target (3-5 years)?
  • Clarifying the target and measures of success
  • Setting the milestone targets per each 6 months
  • Setting the check points to evaluate and adjust the progress
  • Brainstorming future scenarios

In addition to workshop presentations and case studies, you will have opportunity to network with your global peers to share best practises and build cross border relationship.

All participants will receive copies of all workshop presentations materials, along with startup ecosystem mapping and planning documentation and tools.
