Description

Our donation-based - Home Organic Gardening workshop series is back and just a few steps from San Jose Downtown!

Join us once a month at the Valley Verde demonstration garden and learn how to garden all year around.

In these series, you will learn how to seed and care a variety of vegetables and herbs, including ethnic varieties like okra, Japanese cucumber, epazote, chayote among others.

Nurturing the soil and preparing for planting, as well as making your own compost are also topics that we will cover during 2019.

When?: Every 4th Saturday of the month, starting February 23rd from 10:30 am to 12:00 PM

Where? Valley Verde’s team will be offering a fun and hands-on class in organic gardening at the Valley Verde demonstration garden located at 321 Gifford Ave, San Jose 95112

The topics that will be learning each class are:

  • February 23rd, Welcome + Introduction to composting and beneficial insects

  • March 23rd, Preparing for planting: tending the soil, plant care, and watering

  • April 27th, Diverse seedling for diverse communities event - you are invited!

  • May 25th, Integrated Pest Management; the natural way!

  • June 22nd, How to harvest and store your veggies

  • July 27th, Celebrating diversity, culture, and food: Midyear harvesting party!

  • August 24th, Composting, and soil health; replenishing the soil after harvesting

  • September 28th, Winter garden care

  • October 26th, Winter vegetables, and planting efficiency

  • November 23rd, Winter Harvest - Graduation!

Requirements?

  • There is no previous experience required, just motivation for learning!

Valley Verde will provide gardening materials, fun gardening classes, guidance, and support during the year, access to seedlings and seeds during spring and fall).

The classes are donation based and open to the public; we want to make sure that our sliding scale works for all incomes (Suggested donation $10 - $20+ per class).

What should I bring to the event?

If you have gardening tools and gloves waiting for some garden action, bring them and let them enjoy the fresh soil. You can also bring refreshments and hat for those sunny days.



Organizer description

Valley Verde is a nonprofit based in San Jose Downtown that has been addressing food insecurity in Santa Clara County since 2012.

With your attendance, you will be contributing to Valle Verde’ s programs, the cultivation of organic home vegetable gardens, the promotion of healthier eating and providing access to culturally appropriate vegetables to families in need.
