The desire to write down our story is imprinted in our DNA. Sharing our stories with others is a way of sharing our experiences, life lessons, and wisdom. It’s a way of making sense of our lives, a contribution to recorded history, and a legacy we leave to our families and friends. Our stories connect us with one another, providing support and inspiration.

If you’ve felt a desire to tell your life story, but either aren’t sure where to begin or how to continue once you’ve started, then this is the perfect workshop for you. Together, we will make substantive progress and grow in our knowledge of ourselves and of the fundamentals of memoir. In this exciting online course, the instructor will give writing prompts to trigger your memories. You will have the opportunity to write short memoirs regarding topics such as home, school, work, role models and mentors, choices and where they led, and hard-earned wisdom. Each week your instructor will share lessons on the basics of memoir writing, including getting started, outlining vs. writing “by the seat of your pants,” determining your theme, finding your memoir’s structure, and being real while also being fair and kind towards friends and family members you are writing about. While participants will be given the opportunity to share their beginnings and receive encouraging, helpful feedback, sharing is encouraged, but not required.

Note about Writespace’s online workshops: Participants should plan to commit three hours per week to reading, posting, and responding to assignments in the online classroom and one to two hours per week to writing outside the classroom. Online workshops offer built-in flexibility and are ideal for writers with busy schedules, as the times participants visit the classroom are determined solely by their own availability, whether they are available at 3 PM or at 3 AM or at any other times on any other days of the week. Participants will be invited to enter the online classroom and will receive instructions the day the workshop begins.
