Find your voice and discover your inner comedian at our three-week stand up comedy workshop
About this event
Whether you’re a naturally funny jokester or as stiff as a 70yr old librarian, comedy lives in all of us! It’s just a matter of learning how and when to let it out.
Come explore your inner funny, find your confidence, and learn the art of crafting comedic material at our three-week stand up comedy workshop. Hosted by local comedian Brandy Thomas with a new guest speaker every week.
- Open to ages 16+
- Food and drink provided
Syllabus:
Class 1 (10/14): Finding your comedic angle
Learn how to draw from past or current experiences (even the painful ones) to create your comedic persona. Discover your personal comedy style, the qualities or traits that give you a comedic edge, and how to use both when crafting material.
Class 2 (10/21): Strategies for writing and memorizing jokes with guest speaker and comedian Dan Geurin
Learn how to turn comedic thoughts or notes into fully structured bits with punchlines. We’ll also discuss advanced strategies such as call backs and the rule of threes.
Class 3 (10/28): Delivery technique and crowd work with guest speaker and comedian Lauren Turczak
Delivery and crowd engagement are equally as important as material! Learn about common delivery patterns, methods for being confident and secure in front of a crowd, and how to use “riffing” to keep an audience engaged.
FAQ:
Q: I don’t really want to be a comedian but I do enjoy the art of stand up comedy. Is this workshop for me?
A: Absolutely! Each class is designed for individuals with various interest levels. Our goal is to help you harness your confidence and find your inner funny. What you choose to do with that after the workshop is completely up to you.
Q: What age range is this class designed for?
A: We’ll have participants of all ages, ranging from 16 to 40+. The minimum age to attend is 16.
Q: I have terrible stage fright - will I have to perform in front of others?
A: While we’re completely sympathetic to stage fright struggles, we will require all participants to speak in front of the class. Not to worry though! This class is designed to be a supportive, safe space and all participants will be taught strategies to overcome public speaking anxiety.
About the Host:
A Texas-born native turned NYC comedian, Brandy Thomas began pursuing comedy in 2015 after seeing Neal Brennas “three mic” stand up comedy show. As someone who wasn’t exposed to much comedy growing up (but was often touted as being cynical and witty) it wasn’t until she understood the inner mechanics of writing material that she realized she had found the perfect creative outlet and began pursuing comedy full time. She has since had residencies at Broadway Comedy Club in Manhattan as well as Brooklyn House of Comedy, ran workshops for aspiring comedians, and teamed up with Veteran NYC comic, Daniel Perafan, to launch Last Call Comedy Productions. Now that she’s a resident of Glens Falls she’s made it her mission to turn it into the new go-to community for stand up comedy by making shows and workshops accessible and fun for local residents.
Guest Speakers:
Dan Geurin
During the day, Dan Geurin is the typical guy next door. He’s a husband, a father, and your neighbor. However at night, Dan’s life becomes anything but typical when he takes the stage as a professional stand-up comedian. Dan is a regular at Northeast comedy clubs. He’s also performed all over the East Coast as part of The Not Too Far From Home Comedy Tour. Dan will show you that our everyday lives are funny and that you never really know what the guy next door is up to.
Lauren Turczak
Lauren started in theater, performing for Williamstown Theater Festival and Off Broadway productions. She began doing stand up in 2013 and has brought her own brand of comedy to clubs and venues from NYC to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Performing at three Funny Bones, Proctors Theater, The Comedy Works, The Loony Bin, Gotham Comedy Club, Greenwich Village Comedy Club, Mohegan Sun and Broadway Comedy Club to name a few. Her unique take on the mundane is a sarcastic but refreshing break from daily life.
