WHAT: Efforts to enhance biological disarmament and build biosecurity can no longer be achieved by States alone. Rather input from and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders is required if we are to achieve progress in the Biological Weapons Convention and wider efforts to strengthen biological security. Unfortunately, stakeholder perspectives are not necessarily always well understood or reflected in biological disarmament diplomacy. And some sectors are almost entirely absent from discussions.

To address this challenge, UNIDIR invited a diverse range of stakeholders and representatives to contribute their insights in a new report: “Stakeholders’ perspectives on the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention”. These contributors come from around the world and have a range of backgrounds from industry to academia.

This side event to the BWC Review Conference will bring together some of the authors of this publication to discuss activities they have undertaken that could feed into the enhancement of the BWC; reflect on what more could be undertaken by their respective organizations or entities; and provide recommendations on what States Parties to the BWC should do (or not do) to advance the BWC. The event will include a moderated Q&A session with the participants.

Breakfast will be served prior to the event, starting at 08:30hs
