Event description

Audubon Everglades (the Palm Beach County Audubon chapter), in partnership with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), is pleased to offer these special driving tours of Stormwater Treatment Area 1 East (STA-1E).

Tours are scheduled for the first Saturday of September through June and the third Sunday of December, January, and February. Double check the Field Trips page on for specific dates and times as the times change during the hotter months.

Gates open 1/2 hour before the trip start time. The gates close and the trip begins at the published start time. Please be prompt and allow time to combine into carpools. The tour leaves and returns to the gate area as a group and ends by 12 noon or before depending on the birds.

Audubon Everglades entered into an agreement with SFWMD and must abide by their rules or we will not be allowed to conduct these tours.

Each and every participant must complete and submit a separate STA liability form. The form can be downloaded from the "Field Trips" page on the ASE web site: STA Liability Form.

This is a carpool driving tour with 4 people per car. You may be asked to take extra people in your car or join someone in another car.

You must stay with the group and cannot stop or stay in an area without the leader present. Everyone will enter and leave with the group; you may not separate from the group or leave early. The gate is locked after we enter the STA.

If you choose not to follow the rules, you will not be allowed to join any other STA-1E trips.

  • Be respectful of your fellow trip participants.
  • Take every precaution to avoid flushing the birds.
  • Close doors gently -- do not slam doors or otherwise create loud noise.
  • Do not get too close so as to scare the birds away.
  • If you flush a bird, do not further pursue the bird and flush it again.

There are no flush toilets on the property. There may a portable toilet at the entrance of STA-1E but this is not guaranteed. There are flush restroom facilities across Southern Blvd at the intersection of Binks Forest Dr in the Dunkin Donuts, 7-Eleven, and Publix and well as 3+ miles south on Flying Cow Rd at the 1st entrance to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Environmental Preserve on Flying Cow Road.

Once the tour begins, you may not leave the caravan to use the toilet. Please plan accordingly.

Meet at the STA-1E auto entrance at Flying Cow Road and Southern Blvd in Wellington, FL.

  • Take I-95 or the Florida Turnpike to Southern Blvd (SR-80).
  • Travel west to Flying Cow Road (6 miles west of US-441).
  • Just before Flying Cow road, there is a traffic light at the intersection of Binks Forest Rd. Take the next left turn onto Flying Cow Road. (If you get to the traffic light at Seminole Pratt Whitney Rd, you have gone too far west on Southern Blvd.)
  • After turning onto Flying Cow Road, cross the canal and the entrance is immediately on your right.
  • You may enter '1991 Flying Cow Rd, Wellington, FL' into your GPS. (This is not a real postal address.)
  • These trips are space limited. If you have reserved a space and will not be able to attend, please let us know (call or email) as soon as possible so the space can be made available to someone on the waitlist.

On the day of the trip, if you have problems or need to cancel, call or text Susan at 561-644-8830.
