Event description

Description

Founded in 1939, the Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet of St. Petersburg is the oldest operating quartet in Russia. Hear them in Coolidge Corner with a program exploring the musical heritage of their home city, including Aleksandr Glazunov, an early piece by Sergey Rachmaninoff, as well as short selections by numerous composers from the legendary Belaieff salon series Les Vendredis.

Aleksandr Glazunov was a late Romantic composer, conductor and a long-serving director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, teaching and influencing composers from Stravinsky and Prokofiev to Shostakovich. Between 1905 and 1930 he shepherded the Conservatory through a turbulent time that spanned three Revolutions, a World War, a Civil War and a chaotic transformation from Imperial times to Soviet control of the cultural sector. His 3rd quartet, known as the "Slavonic", draws on the influence of Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as Russian folk music, while also showing foreign influences in its lyrical passages. Despite its nickname, the quartet harmoniously balances nationalist and pan-European styles.

This program is presented by BRAI in partnership with Congregation Kehillath Israel's 6PLUS1 Cultural Program.
