Description

St Michael's Arts Festival

After the success of last year’s Prima la Musica, Lunchbreak Opera return with Puccini’s ingenious comedy in one act: Gianni Schicchi. The libretto is based on an incident mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy, where Dante visits the Circle of Impersonators and sees a man savagely attacking another: he is told that the attacker is Schicchi, condemned to Hell for impersonating Buoso Donati and making his will highly favorable to Schicchi. The opera is about how Schicchi came to impersonate Donati and remake the former's will with the connivance of Donati's family, and what the consequences were.

The aria "O mio babbino caro" is one of Puccini's best known, and one of the most popular arias in opera. The opera is an hour long, and will be sung in a new English translation by Thomas Holland and accompanied with a re-orchestration for Italian Folk band by Matthew O’Keeffe. A first half will comprise a selection of the cast’s favourite arias from their diverse operatic tastes.
