The King of Instruments
St. Martin’s Chamber Choir celebrates Saint John’s newly restored organ in a concert of 20th-century blockbusters for organ and choir, including Alexander Gretchaninov’s (1864-1956) Missa Festiva, and Kenneth Leighton’s (1929-1988) Crucifixion and Solus ad victimam.  Gretchaninov, after emigrating from Russia, was asked by a French monsignor to write some Roman Catholic sacred music.  The result – of which his Missa Festiva is an example – is a haunting fusion of Eastern and Western styles.  Leighton, an English composer who anticipated the mystical vein of Tavener and Pärt, wrote similarly haunting and powerful music.
