Event description

Description

Take a stroll around St James for some post-festivities fresh air and entertainment. Colin Davey is a City of Westminster Guide who also worked in the area for over 20 years; thus his talking about what there is to see will be peppered with his own stories, and additionally there will be some readings.

St James excels in offering a multiplicity of interesting things within a small developed area that was largely, and unusually for London, built on a grid system. You would expect mentioning of fine food and fine clothing. But there is also brutalist architecture, the former family home of a famous, indeed infamous, socialite, those Pall Mall gentlemen's clubs, a gentleman's club of a different type, and a location that played a role in a late 19th century scandal that nearly did severe damage to the monarchy.

And is it St James or St James's? With the wonderful English language, there are two schools of thought, and we will discuss this.

We meet outside the Piccadilly entrance to Green Park tube station, ready for a prompt start at 11am.
