As your tour guide leads you by lantern-light through our historic 200-yr. old graveyard, you will meet some of the more interesing “residents” who from time to time make an appearance. Now in our 7th year, the Graveyard Tours change every year with new characters and new features, but always in the same spirit of learning and fun. This year, five characters, dressed in costumes appropriate to their time, status and age reveal their history with stories and interactive dialogue. All proceeds benefit the on-going ministry and outreach of St. James’ Episcopal Church located at 4526 Albany Post Road in Hyde Park, NY.
Is there an age limit for the event?
All ages are welcome but the tours are most suitable for ages 5 and over.
What are my parking options at the event?
Parking is free and adjacent to the churchyard. A parking attendant will direct you when you arrive.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
Cameras and flashlights are welcome. Please silence cell phones.
How long is the tour?
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
The parish office is open Tuesday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Please call 1-845-229-2820.
Can I update my registration information?
Yes. Use the link that came with your order confirmation to access your free Eventbrite account.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, although it is recommended. We will have a master list at the event with the name of each registrant and the number of tickets purchased.
What is the refund policy?
We're sorry but tickets are non-refundable.
How should I dress?
Since this is an outdoor event, please dress appropriately for the weather and the terrain. The event will be held inside the church if the weather makes walking in the graveyard unsafe, but will only be cancelled and rescheduled if the weather is severe. October evenings can get cold, so dress warmly, and since the ground is uneven we recommend wearing rubber-soled shoes or sneakers.
Is the tour scary?
These are historical tours, not haunted tours, and therefore are not meant to be scary. However, walking through a 200-yr. old graveyard at night may in itself be scary for some people.
Can I pay by check online?
At this time, only credit cards are accepted for online orders.
Do you take walk-ins?
We can only accommodate walk-ins if there is room on the tour. Payable by cash or check at the door.
Can I bring a stroller on the tour?
We're sorry but strollers are not allowed on the tour. Much of the tour is off-path. Young children will need to walk or be carried.
Do you have a special tour for mobility impaired?
We are not able to accommodate people using wheelchairs or walkers because of the rough terrain and limited lighting. However, on the 7:00 and 8:00 tours we do offer a golf cart for mobility challenged adults and children which may be reserved when you order your ticket. This option is not available for the 7:30 tours. Children using this service must be accompanied on the cart by an adult.
When & Where
St James' Episcopal Church
4526 Albany Post Rd
St. James' Church
St. James' Episcopal Church was founded in Hyde Park, NY in 1811 by Dr. Samuel Bard, one of the leading physicians of the Revolutionary period. The present church dates from 1844. The churchyard was laid out in 1815, encompassing the Bard family burying ground. The church is most famous, perhaps, for being the home church of President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, a connection which has placed it at the center of many events of national importance.
