Event description

Description

Join the Salem State University Asian Student Association and the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Salem State for a screening of "First They Killed My Father" directed by Angelina Jolie and based on Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung's best-selling book. This film recounts the horrors Ung suffered as a child under the rule of the deadly Khmer Rouge. Based on the deadly rule of the Khmer Rouge, a communist inspired movement led by the dictator Pol Pot under which an estimated 25% of the Cambodian population died from malnutrition, forced labour and mass murder from 1975 until 1979. This historical event is today known as the Cambodian genocide. This film is shot completely in Cambodia with an all-Cambodian cast and in "Khmer", the Cambodian language. There will be a facilitated audience discussion following the screening. Light refreshments will be available.
