Event description

Description

Romanesque and Tudor Revival in style, Calvary Presbyterian Church was designed by Brooklyn-born New York City architects Stephenson & Greene, designers of more than 30 churches throughout the northeast, and constructed in 1894, replacing an 1872 church destroyed by fire in 1892. The church is particularly notable for its five large Maitland Armstrong art glass windows, exceptional examples of the American school of opalescent glass, created in 1914 by David Maitland Armstrong and his daughter and studio partner Helen Maitland Armstrong. Three of the windows were moved to Calvary Presbyterian in 1952 from the 1892 Randall Memorial Church at Sailor’s Snug Harbor, which was razed. The church reconfigured its Castleton Avenue gable to accept three of the windows in 1952; the two additional windows were installed at the transept and interior in 1956.

Take 44 or 46 bus from St. George ferry terminal to Bement Av/Castleton Ave stop, adjacent to church.
