Event description

Description

The cuisine of Sri Lanka is one of the most fully flavored of Asia, with boldly spiced curries that use seafood, vegetables, and meat alongside rice dishes, crepes, and the unique noodle patties called string hoppers. This cuisine is rare in California, but there are a few restaurants that serve it. One is Apey Kade in Tarzana, and on June 11 the Culinary Historians of Southern California will enjoy a Lankan tasting dinner. The menu includes all of the following:

Appetizers: Fish patties, fish croquettes, Lankan-style eggrolls, vegetarian somosa.

Main Courses: Egg hopper crepe, string hoppers, Pittu (millet with coconut), Pol Rotti (flatbread with coconut), saffron rice, red mackerel curry, mutton curry, devilled chicken, cashew curry with peas, dhal with spinach, eggplant Moju (pickle with mustard and vinegar).

Chutneys: Chillie paste, coconut sambol, sauteed onion sambal.

Dessert: Wattallappam (Lankan style flan).

Beverages: Passion fruit juice, iced coffee, tea.

The meal will be in their private upstairs room, and will be hosted by restaurant owners Ranmal and Lalith, who will explain Lankan cuisine, food customs, and other aspects of food culture. This dinner is limited to 25 people - if it sells out then a second dinner will be scheduled.

Before reserving, please note.

1. This cuisine is very spicy and will be served in authentic style - if you don't enjoy bold flavors of chili, ginger, pepper, cloves, cardamom, etc., this is not the place to be that evening.

2. Alcoholic beverages will not be served at this event.

3. This dinner is for current members of the Culinary Historians of Southern California only - if you would like to renew your lapsed membership, you may do so at the link on the ticket page. If you would like to join, we would be delighted to welcome you. More information about the group and a membership form may be found at our temporary website at http://www.culinaryhistoriansofsoutherncalifornia.com .
