Description

SQLOrlando - Learn PowerBI in a Day

Whether you're a DBA, Developer, Report Writer, Analyst, or a Manager there is a lot of value in adding PowerBI to your skill set. This one day class is designed to introduce you to all the major areas of PowerBI, give you an idea of what is possible, and help you get over the initial learning curve so you can go back to the office and actually use PowerBI to look at your data.

Who Should Attend

Attendees should have some basic understanding of how to write SQL queries. Previous experience with any reporting tool will be helpful but not required. Even a student with zero experience will learn a lot in this class.

Prerequisites

To make the most of the class students should bring a laptop and power cable with the following (free downloads are available) installed:

  • PowerBI installed (update to latest version!)

Class Outline

This class is presented as four modules of approximately 1.5 hours each.

Module 1 - Building Reports

We start with a deep dive into PowerBI Desktop. We'll work through the process of designing and publishing a report. We'll explore visualizations, drilldown, drill through, slicers, filters, bookmarks, and mobile reports.

Module 2 - Data Modeling and Security

This module builds on the basics of Module 1 and it's all about the data. How to connect to various data sources, work with related tables, categorizing data, creating a data model, formatting, and how to shape and transform data within PowerBI. We'll also look at how and when to apply role based security to your report.

Module 3 -Advanced Data Modeling

This module is where you get to see the power of Power BI. We'll explore more on shaping and transforming data with custom functions, handling multi-column relationships, calculations using DAX, how to work with large datasets using aggregations, and how to measure performance of your reports.

Module 4 - Viewing and Sharing Reports with the Power BI Service

The last module is all about letting other people use your reports and data models using the Power BI service. Uploading reports, navigation, building a dashboard, how to keep data current, and controlling who sees your reports is all covered. We'll also walk through self-service data prep in the cloud using Power BI Dataflows.

Event Logistics

Parking is free. A light breakfast of coffee and bagels will be provided. Lunch is included in the registration and will be boxed lunches or salads (attendees will have their choice).
