SQL Server Training for Developers
Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 8:00 AM - Friday, May 10, 2013 at 5:00 PM (EDT)
You're a developer. You're stuck managing a database server that you don't understand - but that's about to change in just two days of learning and fun.
Day 1: Building Faster Apps
- How to Think Like the Engine
- Indexing for Application Performance
- Common T-SQL Antipatterns
- Completely Legal Performance Enhancements
- Scaling Applications with Isolation Levels
- Leaving the Windows Open
Day 2: Performance Troubleshooting
- Using sp_Blitz and Wait Stats to Find the Bottleneck
- Rules, Rules, and Rules: How Computers are Governed
- What Queries are Killing My Server?
- How to Handle a Performance Crisis
- Built-In Tuning Tools
- Bonus Electives: SQL Server in Amazon Web Services, and How to Choose a High Availability & Disaster Recovery Architecture
- Read the module list for more details
You'll go back to the office with scripts and knowledge to help you:
- Improve the performance of your database
- Diagnose problems in your T-SQL and schema
- Build a prioritized to-do list to share with managers and developers
Prerequisites: you've been working with applications that store data in SQL Server for a couple of years. You're comfortable writing queries and designing tables to store what you need. However, you're not sure how to pick the right indexes, when and how to rewrite a query, and how to interpret SQL Server's built-in metrics to know exactly what's causing performance problems.
About the Presenters
Brent Ozar, Jeremiah Peschka, Jes Schultz Borland, and Kendra Little are SQL Server experts who love teaching developers how to break speed limits. They're all Microsoft MVPs, and two of them (Brent and Kendra) are also Microsoft Certified Masters. Read their bios and resumes.
Online Followup Sessions Included
Two weeks after the training, join the Brent Ozar Unlimited team for a pair of two-hour Q&A webcasts. You'll be able to ask followup questions to dig more into what you found after you got back to the office. We'll run a morning session and an afternoon session to make sure everyone can attend.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are meals and coffee included?
You know how we feel about food! Registration includes a morning break with coffee & snacks, lunch, and an afternoon break with coffee & snacks. Dinner is on you. If you're staying at the Embassy Suites with us, your hotel room fees include a free breakfast in the atrium as well. (We like Embassy Suites breakfasts - they cook omelets to order.)
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
If you drive into downtown Atlanta and you want to park at the Embassy Suites, you've got an easy button: they do valet parking for $29 per day. Self parking is not available at the hotel, but there's street parking lots available nearby. Plan on arriving early the first day if you want to find cheaper parking in the neighborhood.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
Bring your laptop, tablet, and endless curiosity. While we make every attempt to have WiFi and power outlets for all attendees, we can't guarantee it.
Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
Yes. If you can't make it to the event, you can send someone else on your behalf. Preferably someone famous that we'd like to meet. We suggest Kevin Kline - not the SQL guy, we've already met him - the actor.
Can I update my registration information?
What is the refund policy?
If you're not sure if you'll make it, you can hold your seat in the class by paying a 20% nonrefundable deposit via check. Choose the "Show Other Payment Options" link next to the "Order Now" button, and choose the check option. You'll need to pay the remainder of the amount via check to the address given during the purchase process before the class starts. (Payment is not accepted at the door.) If you pay for the event in full, full refunds are available until 30 days prior to the event (April 9, 2013). After April 9th, no refunds will be issued.
Can I pay at the door?
No. Sales close on May 2nd (one week before the event) and payment will not be accepted onsite.
The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
Yes. We understand that you're in the Database Mirroring Witness Protection Program. Just don't try to sneak in two people with the same ticket, or you'll learn the way of the Microsoft Certified Master.
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
