SQFC Fall 2020 Bomba and Plena Classes: Learn about Puerto Rican Culture
Event Information
About this Event
Learn Afro-Puerto Rican drum and dance beats and moves with Segunda Quimbamba this fall! We've been teaching the rich cultural folkloric music known as la Bomba and la Plena for 20 years in Jersey City. Fun, energetic and engaging! This program culminates on December 20 with a student recital with Segunda Quimbamba.
Classes at the Nimbus Arts Center in Downtown Jersey City will be offered in-person and online. Max 5 -6 students in person (in studio); other students join through Zoom (dance) and Facebook (drum) weekly. Please read health protocols information listed below for in studio facility safety measures. The new building is ADA compliant accessible. Accommodations for program accessibility contact Nanette Hernandez at nhernandez89@gmail.com or call/text 201-463-4814.
Each class will be divided into two groups which will rotate weekly to allow for all students to have access to in-person instruction if they wish. Students can also opt to take the class entirely online.
Dance classes begin with a warm up then the learning of Bomba rhythms, steps and choreography: Sica, Yuba, Cuembe, Holandes and Seis Corrido. We also teach the dance steps to Plena as well as the call-and-response-based songs which are all sung in Spanish.
Students are introduced to Bomba and Plena drums - all major and minor percussion elements.
We offer beginners and advanced learning to students. Families and returning students discounts available. Adults and Children 7 or older.
