AMT for General Civil and Domestic Relations Mediators  

SCAO-approved for up to eight (8) hours of advanced mediation training required by MCR 2.411(F)(4) and MCR 3.216(G)(3) to remain on court rosters. (The full 8 hours consists of 7 hours in-class training plus 1 hour pre-session work. See * immediately below.)

REGISTRATION: 8:30 am - 9:00 am. Training begins promptly at 9:00 with one-hour lunch break around noon. 

  • *Pre-Session Play-by-Play – view and reflect on a 45-minute mediation video. (*Participants must submit “homework” by April 18, 2019 for the full 8 hours of AMT credit. No make-up possible for this element of the training. Details will be sent on March 1, over 6 weeks before the homework is due.)
  • Legal & Newsworthy Updates – Cover all your baseswhen you learn more aboutnew case law, court rules and procedures impacting mediators.
  • Preparing for Mediation –Before stepping up to the plate,take a closer look atmediator disclosures, and avoid fouling out.
  • Managing Mediator Risks – Improve your batting averagewith a better understanding of claims against mediators, and risks to mediators for the Unauthorized Practice of Law and under the Michigan Standards of Conduct for Mediators.
  • Moneyball Mediation – Consider a range of strategies to helpparties negotiate and respond to demands to “Show me the money!
  • Mediator Coaching – Share challenges and questions from your own experience and receive practice tips from teammates and other players.

FAQs

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? Covered parking below street level is available across Ottawa Avenue from the Courthouse in either the City or the 5/3 Bank garages. An open air lot is located directly behind the Courthouse on Ionia Avenue. 

What may I bring into the event? Due to security screening, no weapons of any kind are allowed into the Courthouse. You are encouraged to bring your own lunch. You are welcome to bring warm clothes (hats, sweaters, scarves, jackets as we cannot regulate room temperature), cell phones, snacks, food and bottled water. Coffee and water will be provided.

Do I need to bring my printed ticket to the event? No, just a copy of your completed at-home pre-training assignment which is due by April 17 at 5:00 p.m. You may not be entitled to claim more than 7 hours of advanced training credit.

All three presenters regularly provide advanced mediation training, volunteer as mediators for the Dispute Resolution Center of West Michigan, serve on committees advising Michigan’s State Court Administrative Office on improving mediation in Michigan and  have served as officers in the ADR Sections of both the State Bar and the Grand Rapids Bar Association.
