Spring 2021 Harbor Ring Ride!
Event Information
About this event
*DON'T FORGET TO WEAR BLUE, TO LOCATE OTHER HARBOR RING RIDERS!*
If you want to ride the route in any capacity you MUST fill out the waiver.
Please also fill out the form: so we can make any necessary last-minute adjustments.
In addition, feel free to join our whatsapp group for riders. This is the best way to communicate any questions/concerns on the day of and keep in touch with other riders!
Ride leaders.
While the ride is self-guided, we have recommended stops and meeting times (see Route) for those stops when we anticipate our first wave of riders will arrive.
For those starting at the beginning, at John Paul Jones Park, we have ride leaders leading groups of about 30-40 leaving in waves every 15-20 minutes starting at 9:00AM at an average pace of 12-14mph. This is to ensure that not too many riders are congregating at once, and everyone is at a safe distance from each other due to Covid-19.
Speakers.
Paul Gertner, the founder of Harbor Ring, will speak at the ride before riding himself, at 8:30AM, followed by mayoral candidate Art Chang, at 8:40AM.
Checking in.
Please arrive no later than 8:15AM to check-in, prepare for the ride, and listen to our wonderful speakers. We will be handing out stickers - which are your tokens for discounts at local businesses we’ve partnered with along the route (see Partners), snacks, and water (limited supply), and you’ll also have a chance to meet other riders including our co-chairs, and support Harbor Ring by purchasing our merchandise! You can also directly donate to Harbor Ring using our Venmo or cash during check in. Your donation and/or purchases will go directly towards the fight to open up the Verrazzano to bikes and pedestrians! Face coverings are required.
Before the ride.
Please make sure your bike is in good riding condition, and your wheels are pumped. We will have several pumps available at the start in Fort Wadsworth, and will be doing bike checks if desired. Please also don’t forget to wear BLUE (any shade) to locate other Harbor Ring riders and volunteers.
Citibike.
While citibike is unfortunately only available for parts of the route in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Jersey City and Hoboken, you can still join us by docking every 30 minutes (non-members) or 45 minutes (members) for part of the route. We have 10 FREE day passes to give out first come, first serve, with the hopes of making this ride accessible to all - even if you don’t own a bike!
Don’t forget to bring.
- Water/water bottle (there are several working water fountains listed on the route)
- Snacks (we have limited snacks available at the start in John Paul Jones Park and midpoint at Riverside Park - Ten Mile River Playground from 11:30 - 12:30PM)
- Sunscreen, hat/sunglasses (it looks like it’ll be on the warm side)
- A buddy! (We recommend doing the ride with a friend or two for safety, especially for more inexperienced riders.
- Face covering (Please be sure to wear a face covering when congregating)
Route.
You have the option of doing the 34 mile - short route* (using the ferry to Paulus Hook) or the 60 mile - long route and joining on at any of these stops with estimated time stamps of when the first wave will arrive. Our preferred app is ridewithgps, and we recommend downloading and printing the cue sheet (printer-friendly: short route | long route) for the route you choose to take prior to the ride, or exporting the route to Garmin, Google, and other compatible devices.
*If you plan on doing the short route, it’s recommended that you meet the first wave of riders at Stop 5: Liberty State Park - Flag Plaza at @1:40PM, the closest stop to the Paulus Hook ferry terminal.
