Description

Please join UM3D for the Spring 2018 Innovation Showcase as faculty and staff across our campus demonstrate innovative programs, courses, and projects that target student success in technology-rich learning environments at the University of Memphis. Lunch will be provided to all faculty and staff in attendance.

ACTIVE LEARNING IN COMPUTER SCIENCE CLASSROOMS

Presenter: Vinhthuy Phan, Ph. D., Computer Science

Dr. Vinhthuy Phan will discuss a set of software tools that have been used to enable active learning in Computer Science courses. These tools allow teachers and students to share code in real-time. This platform opens up many opportunities for early intervention and individualized learning.

CLASSROOM INTERVENTIONS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING

Presenter: Jaime Sabel, Ph. D., Biological Sciences

Dr. Sabel will present innovations in the biology department designed to support students to consider and enhance their own understanding of biological concepts and practices. The development of a new Synthetic Biology CURE (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience) designed to give students authentic research experience in a classroom setting will be of particular focus. This work has implications, particularly for other science departments, to consider implementing similar frameworks to enhance student success.

USING VIRTUAL REALITY AS A TEACHING TOOL

Presenter: Sheri Howard, Ph.D., Loewenberg School of Nursing

This talk will describe the use of virtual reality. Virtual reality offers the opportunity to step into places, roles, and experiences that were previously impossible, or at the very least, inaccessible to most. The immersive nature of virtual reality brings depth to educational content by engaging the senses and allowing exploration to a degree that would be difficult to duplicate within the confines of a classroom, making it an ideal catalyst for curiosity and true learning.

THE IMPACT OF APPLIED METHODOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS ON LEARNING

Presenter: Firouzeh Sabri, Ph.D., Physics and Material Sciences

The programs/ projects showcased in this presentation utilize innovative and unique approaches that have successfully attracted students to the respective programs/ projects. The lessons learned have created a platform for launching new programs while also identifying areas in existing programs needing improvement and further refinement.

USING ADAPTIVE LEARNING TO IMPROVE STUDENT SUCCESS

Presenters: Jill Dapremont, Ph.D., Shirleatha Lee, Ph.D., Loewenberg School of Nursing and Niki Bray, Ed.D., School of Health Studies

Come learn how two programs (Nursing and School of Health Studies) collaborated to increase student success using adaptive learning, experiential learning, and credit by exam options. Success data, lessons learned, how to get started will be addressed.

43 TO 0: LECTURING TO GAMING FOR SUCCESS USING KAHOOT!

Presenter: Niki Bray, Ed.D., School of Health Studies

In this session, Dr. Bray will demonstrate how she redesigned an Anatomical Kinesiology course using Kahoot!, a free interactive gaming tool that students access from their mobile device. Kahoot! can be used in any classand at any level, regardless of the number of students. Kahoot! can also be assigned as homework and students can challenge classmates and others to test their content knowledge on a particular concept. The impact observed was not only immediate but also astounding, as the failure rate plummeted from 43% historically to 0%, with no students dropping or withdrawing from the class.
