Event description

Description

The UChicago Graduate Student and Postdoc Innovation Mixer is an opportunity for graduate students and postdocs cross the University of Chicago to experience the Polsky Exchange, meet one-another, and spark interdisciplinary collaborations. This will be a great opportunity to meet other like-minded individuals and even find new teammates for any research project or business idea you're working on.

The Mixer will kick-off with registration and welcoming remarks from Laurens Mets, Master of the Biological Sciences Division and Associate Professor, Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology, and the Committee on Genetics. Professor Mets is also a cofounder of Electrochaea, a renewable energy startup spun out of the University. He will discuss his career path in research and entrepreneurship, collaboration as a critical element of innovation, and the story of Electrochaea.

This will be followed by timed, structured networking around different industry areas. Delicious, hot crepes and drinks will be served.

The program is sponsored by the Polsky Exchange in partnership with UChicagoGRAD and several student groups from around campus. These groups seek to bridge divides across the campus and provide graduate students with the opportunity to meet one-another and support innovative startups and research.

About the speaker:

Dr. Mets received his B.A. in biological chemistry from Pomona College and his Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from Harvard University in 1973. His research has focused on understanding how plant and algal cells construct their photosynthetic apparatus and on how photosynthesis functions as a solar energy conversion system. He has an interest in applying genetic engineering to the improvement of photosynthetic production of hydrogen from water as an environmentally friendly fuel.

Agenda:
5:00 pm: Registration and reception
5:30 pm: Structured networking
6:30 pm: General networking & Wrap-up
