Team Spread the Light is excited to be one of Capital Cause's Giving Circle Projects - a campaign that recruits young philanthropists to crowd-fund grants and crowd-source their skills toward completing 60-day high impact projects that produce measurable results benefiting under-served communities!
WHO ARE WE: We Are Young Philanthropists Committed to Making Change by Spreading Literacy and Light (#SLSL2013)
Team Spread the Light was challenged with raising $2,000 to benefit students at Potomac Lighthouse Public Charter School (PLPCS), a school where nearly 90% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school is ranked 16th out of 117 DC public schools.
Our campaign theme is Spread Literacy, Spread Light (#SLSL2013) because this project will fund Reading A-Z.com, a proven online literacy tool. It will also fund three laptops in support of implementing a new blended learning literacy program to supplement their current reading curriculum for the 2013-2014 school year.
WHAT IS THIS CAMPAIGN: We Are Fighting Literacy by Funding an Online Learning Program and Three Laptops that Will Benefit Children
Literacy, especially encouraged at a young age, is important for a child’s education. Literacy is the “light” in our fundraising campaign as we seek to help PLPCS close the achievement gap. Currently, about 40% of the student population is performing below grade level. With almost half of students performing below grade level, PLPCS must work harder, smarter, and longer to make sure their students have a fair shot in life. In order to beat the odds that are against them as children born into poverty, teachers go above and beyond in the regular school day to help their students achieve.
WHO WILL BENEFIT: 144 Children Age 5-12 Who Attend Potomac Lighthouse Charter School
One-hundred forty-four (144) students, ages five through twelve, will receive access to literacy enrichment programs. The school's learning library will receive three laptops on which to administer the program to youth specific to individualized academic intervention that many students need.
