Workshop Objectives

By the end of the workshop, clinicians will be able to:

Mental Health Stigma

  • Incorporate knowledge of Veteran-specific nuances of mental illness stigmatization into your clinical work
  • Utilize the concept of “internalized stigma” in working with Veterans
  • Apply several stigma-dismantling strategies in your therapeutic work with Veterans

Military Sexual Trauma

  • Define military sexual trauma (MST)
  • List 3-4 common difficulties women experience after MST
  • Identify 1-2 resources available to women who have experienced MST (both VA and non-VA)
  • Identify 2-3 barriers that may prevent women from seeking treatment following MST

Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Increase knowledge regarding brain injury
  • Identify the scope of the impact of brain injury on the general population
  • Describe resources that may be useful when working with individuals affected by Brain Injury

Chronic Illness in Older Veterans

  • Recognize how military culture and war cohorts impact mental health over life span
  • Explain the impact of chronic health conditions on mental health engagement and compliance in older Veterans
  • Describe three barriers to engaging in mental health services for older Veterans
  • Identify four resources clinicians can utilize to assist in providing comprehensive support to older Veterans
